Barishal University closed sine die on student protest
Authorities closed down Barishal University for indefinite period today in wake of student protests that sparked from Independence Day programme.
University Vice Chancellor SM Imamul Haque told our local correspondent, the measure was taken in order to keep “peace and discipline” at campus.
Notices have been hung to vacate halls by today, putting residential students on dilemma. They strongly criticized the move of the authorities.
Protests sparked after the students alleged that they were not a part of the university’s Independence Day programme at campus.
What began as an impromptu procession spiraled after the vice chancellor made a comment on the protests that ultimately foiled the programme.
Yesterday, the students boycotted all classes and examinations and moved for a six-point demand, focusing on the election of central students’ union.
Last reported, students were demonstrating at campus demanding resignation of the vice chancellor.
