Murder accused killed in ‘gunfight’ at port city
A murder accused was killed in what law enforcers described as “gunfight” in Chattogram city’s Bakalia area early today.
The deceased was Saiful, 35, the prime accused in a case filed over murder of a Jubo League activist Lokman Rahman Rony.
Police arrested him from Fatikchhari last night, Pranab Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Bakulia police, told our local staff correspondent.
“We took him to recover the weapon of murder in Kolpolok residential area where Saiful’s men intercepted us and opened gunfire,” he said.
Police retaliated with equal, triggering a “gunfight”.
After the battle subsided, the bullet-hit body of Saiful was found and rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Two police officials, Sub-Inspector Tarimuzzaman and Assistant Sub-Inspector Alamgir, were also injured during the gunfight, he added.
At least two cases were filed against Saiful, said Nobel Chakma, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Kotwali circle).
Jubo League leader Lokman Rahman Rony, 35, was shot dead allegedly by Saiful and other rivals in port city's Bakalia on Sunday.
