A Dhaka court sentenced four persons to death for killing a class nine student, Zakia Akter Chanpa, after raping her in Faridpur in December, 2012.

The four convicts – Shamim Mondol, Akash Mondol, Jahid Hasan and Md Babul Hossain Rajib – were also given life term imprisonment and fined Tk 1 lakh each for raping the victim.

Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder however acquitted another accused Mousumi Akhter Sumi as it did not found her guilty.

Of the convicts, Shamim and Jahid were produced before the court while Akash and Babul, who secured bail from the High Court, remained absent at the courtroom.

Zakia Akter Chanpa, 15, a student at Pordia Girls' High School in Kanaipur union, "went missing" from the wedding ceremony at her relative's house at Kashemabad village on the night of December 13, 2012.

The following morning, her body was found hanging from a tree in the village.

Chanpa's elder brother Hasibul Islam filed a case with Faridpur Kotwali police station the same day, accusing their neighbour Salam Matabbar, his son Shamim Mondol and four others.
