5 more people die as Fani’s onslaught continues
Five people including two children died during a storm caused by Cyclone Fani in Noakhali, Barguna and Patuakhali early today.
With the five deaths, at least 12 people were killed in different parts of the country since yesterday following the onslaught of cyclonic storm Fani.
Triggered by the cyclonic storm, the sky remains overcast and rain and thunder showers with gusty winds is continuing across Bangladesh since yesterday.
Disruption of electricity and internet connection have been reported from many areas of the country after the storm started.
BARGUNA
Nur Jahan, 50, and her grandson Zahidul, 16, died after a tree fell on their home when they were asleep around 3:00am at Charduani village in Patharghata upazila of Barguna, our Patuakhali correspondent reports quoting Hanif Sikder, Officer-in-charge of Patharghata Police Station.
PATUAKHALI
Habib, 25, died after a tree fell on him when he was walking on the road in the Kuakata municipality area around 12:15pm today, our Patuakhali correspondent reports quoting Abdul Barek Molla, mayor of Kuakata municipality.
Two others got injured in the incident. They are admitted to Kuakata Hospital, he added.
NOAKHALI
In Subarnachar upazila, a two-year-old child died in a wall collapse in the wee hours of today.
The deceased was identified as Md Ibrahim, son of Abdur Rahman from Char Aminul Haque village in the upazila, our Noakhali correspondent reports quoting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO)of Subarnachar Abu Oadud.
In Comnpaniganj upazila, a fourth grader died when a tree fell on her today.
The deceased was identified as Fahima Akhter, from Char Kakra Union of the upazila, Faisal Ahmed, upazila nirbahi offcer (UNO) of the upazila told our correspondent.
Apart from the deaths, in various places of Noakhali at least 50 people suffered injuries and more than 200 houses were battered by the storm, the UNO said.
Meanwhile, a severe storm is raging on in Hatia upazila of the district and it could not be known yet how much loss this upazila has suffered, reports our correspondent.
CHANDPUR
At least five people were injured and more than 50 houses were completely damaged in a storm due to the influence of Fani in Rajrajeshwar union last night.
As there were no cyclone centres, people stayed in their own homes during the storm, our correspondent reports quoting locals.
Hazrat Ali Bapari, the chairman of the union parishad said, " The storm started around 3:45am and completely destroyed 50 houses and partially damaged another six houses.
On the other hand, in Haimchar upazila of the district 10-12 houses have been partially damaged by the storm, said local UNO (UNO) Ferdousi Begum.
The UP chairman has been instructed to make a list of the people who suffered losses during the storm, Kaniz Fatema, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) told our correspondent.
Crops have also been damaged by the storm in the district, she added.
Fani crossed over Gangetic West Bengal and Satkhira, Jashore and Khulna region in the southwestern part of Bangladesh and moved north-northeastwards further, weakening into a cyclonic storm, and was located over Dhaka-Faridpur region at 9:00am, a Met Office bul
KHULNA
During the cyclonic storm rifts appeared on the embankment on the Pashur river, which was fixed with makeshift sand bags by Water Development Board with the help of locals.
Approximately a 22-feet rift was reported in the embankment near Baniashanta Bazar area in Dacope upazila, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board told our Khulna correspondent.
The rift appeared during low tide and was fixed immediately. For this reason, people in the area were not affected, he said.
