2 to die for kidnapping child in Dhaka
A tribunal in Dhaka today sentenced two kidnappers to death and eight others to life in jail in a case filed for kidnapping Abir, an eight-year-old boy, for a ransom of Tk10 crore in May 2015.
The convicts with death are: Moshiur Rahman Montu, 40, and Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan Madbor, 35 while lifers are Md Rezaul Karim, 36, Md Nazrul Islam, 32, Abdullah Al Mamun, 38, Iqbal Hossain Shuvo, 28, Sajib Ahmed Kamal Uddin, 47, Md Alim Hossain Chandan, 27, Kausar Mridha, 27 and Md Reza Mridha, 30.
Of them, Mizan, Kausar and Reza have been absconding while the others were present at the tribunal.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.
Judge Md Khadem Ul Kayes of the seventh Tribunal for Prevention of Women & Children Repression of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of seven convicts.
The tribunal acquitted Zahiruddin Md Babar and Shah Md Waliullah as their involvement with the incident was not proved.
Earlier the prosecution and defence completed their arguments and the tribunal recorded statements of 30 prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.
According to the prosecution, a group of kidnappers led by Moshiur Rahman kidnapped Abir, 8, a Madrassa student of Uttara, at Banani Staff Road on May 2 of 2015 when Abir was returning from his Madrassa on a private car.
The kidnappers then demanded Tk 10 crore from the father of the victim as ransom. They threatened to kill the child if their demand was not met.
After depositing two crore at different accounts, victim’s father, Shahadat Hossain Shameem, managing director of TNZ Group of Companies, informed Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) about the abduction and ransom.
The Rab members then rescued Abir from in front of Kurmitola General Hospital with the kidnappers and recovered Tk 1.30crore from their possession.
Later on May 17, victim’s maternal uncle Enayet Ullah filed a case with Cantonment Police Station in this regard.
