Accused in kidnapping, rape case flees from police van in Gaibandha

An accused in an abduction and rape case has escaped with handcuffs while getting down from a police van at Govindganj Police Station in Gaibandha.

Police said the incident took place around 4:30 am today (May 31, 2022).

The handcuffed man hit a sub-inspector and two constables during the incident, our Bogura correspondent reports quoting the police.

The accused is Md Samiul Islam (27) of Baluapara area in the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Gondindganj Police Station, Izar Uddin, said, "Samiul's father-in-law filed a case against him for kidnapping his sister-in-law four to five days ago. After investigation, police came to know that the accused also raped the victim. Later, sections of abduction and rape were added to the case.

"A team of Gabindaganj police arrested Samiul from Chandpur and rescued the victim last night and both were brought to the police station," he said.

But Samiul fled with handcuffs injuring a sub-inspector and two constables, the OC confirmed. "We have filed another case against Samiul," he added.

Police are conducting raids to nab the fugitive. The victim was produced before the court, OC Izar Uddin said.
