What to binge watch once ‘Game of Thrones’ ends
Game of Thrones, one of the most successful television shows of our current age, is approaching its end. While there’s still time before the final episode of the series airs, diehard fans may already be wondering what they can watch next. Thankfully, there are plenty of other serials that feature what fans love so much about Game of Thrones: the drama, the battles, the magic and the royal intrigue. Let us look at a few shows, available on Netflix, which can fill the void that Game of Thrones is sure to leave behind.
Peaky Blinders
Cillian Murphy stars in this early-20th-century period drama as Thomas Shelby, a World War I vet turned patriarchal crime boss who wants to up his family’s social and financial status in England. The Shelbys’ story plays out as historical fiction, loosely inspired by the exploits of real-life gangs based in Birmingham around the late 1800s and early 1900s. Rival bands of thugs clash for underworld influence here in a way that is not unlike Game of Thrones, just on a less fantastical scale: complex political power plays, suspense, and gritty tussles abound, with enough blood to rival the Red Wedding.
Outlander
Based on the bestselling series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe as a World War II-era nurse who is suddenly transported back in time to 1743. It’s then that she meets a Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser, which sets the stage for a timeline-bending narrative, a steamy romance, and plenty of battles.
The Last Kingdom
Based on The Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell, this show stars Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon warrior who is enslaved by Vikings as a child. Raised by his captors, his allegiances are tested when he returns to his homeland.
Frontier
Frontier chronicles the North American fur trade of the 1700s. The show centres on Declan Harp, an outlaw campaigning to breach the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on the fur trade in Canada. It’s a story of greed and power, similar to the likes of Game of Thrones. Plus, the lead is played by none other than Jason Momoa, Khal Drogo himself.
