Suborna’s ‘Elation’ in Goa
Promising Bangladeshi artist Suborna went to Siolim, Goa, India, on a month-long art residency programme. The artworks she produced there along with the works she took from Bangladesh, were showcased in a solo exhibition titled Elation. “I try to insert the colours, aroma and the simple beauty of the place where I attended the residency, into my works,” said Suborna. “The colours of my previous works uncannily resemble with the colours and designs of the houses over there. It made me so joyful. I also had the opportunity to work with my mother’s saree. I felt that the environment of Goa was quite intimate.”
The show was held at Galeria De Goa, Above the Green Triangle, Jackni, Parra in Goa.
Kari Knapp, artist and founder of MOG Subodh Kerkar, artist Santosh and artist Pradip jointly inaugurated the exhibition as distinguished guests.
“I was inspired to sew by my mother. Sewing plays a role in my artworks as well,” Suborna added. “Besides, I love to write letters. In Goa, I wrote letters to my parents and dear ones. I displayed an installation on a wall of the gallery with the letters written during my residency. I felt nostalgic and was amazed to see such positive reactions to my work.”
Suborna completed 12 lithographs and 18 drawings evoking warm colours and floral designs. She took the print’s impressions at artist Seema Kohli’s studio. The neighbourhood of the place and the floral designs of a nearby cathedral attracted her immensely. She feels privileged to have formed close friendships with the local community in Goa. The NGO, Human Touch, also invited Suborna to conduct an art workshop with 44 HIV positive children.
Many famous Goa-based artists like Pradeep Naik, Shilpa Naik, Kedar Dk, Kalidas Mhamal, Diptej Vernekar, Dhiraj Pednekar, Santosh Morajkar, Rajendra Usapkar, Rajan Mardolkar and others visited and appreciated the exhibition.
