Azmeer Hossain’s world of artistic creation

Artist Azmeer Hossain loves to experiment with technicality and compositional patterns in his works. He spent his childhood at the bank of the Buriganga, Dhaka, and lived in Coney Island, New York, in his youth, for his higher education. Visiting the Buriganga, the Hudson, the beaches of Coney Island and a plethora of places for outdoor projects has hugely inspired him. Many of his paintings are based on landscapes, cityscapes and mindscapes.

The artist’s blissful memories are evident in his works. Compositional beauty, maturity and depth are three fine qualities that his semi-abstract and abstract paintings evoke. Aspects of nature -- the sky, horizon, lake, sunlight, twilight and moonlight -- create fantastic illusions in his artworks. Geometric forms, diagonal shapes, architectural designs are also important elements in his paintings.

He uses watercolour and mixed media like watercolour with acrylic, white pen and others for creating layers and lines. He uses white and keeps paper white on the surfaces of the works that create a presentation of light and shades. A conspicuous connotation of modernity is noticeable in his art.

“I regard eminent artists such as Monirul Islam, Mohammad Eunus and Kalidas Karmakar as the masters of composition. Their work is unique, as they ceaselessly play and experiment with it,” said Azmeer Hossain. “If I cannot come out of the cocoon of conventional composition, my paintings will be stuck at a certain level. So, I try to bring novelty in my compositions.”

Azmeer completed his education in Painting and Mixed Media at The Art Students League of New York, USA. He also had three drawing courses at School of Visual Art’under Illustrator John Ruggeri, in New York. Prior to that, he studied Printmaking at University of Dhaka.

His solo exhibitions include From The Pages of Memory, Small Is Beautiful, Going Together and Emotion Recollected in Tranquility, all held in Dhaka.

 Azmeer has participated in a number of group exhibitions, art camps and workshops held around the world. Apart from participating in National Art Exhibition, Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh and Dhaka Art Summit, he took part in many important group exhibitions and biennales held in The Netherlands, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Bangladesh and USA.

His artworks are in the collection of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, Bangladesh Consulate General, New York, Indonesian Cultural Ministry, Bangladesh Bank, Bengal Foundation, LABAID, SAPL Group, BDL Group, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Gallery Cosmos and. Thikana Group in New York. Many private collectors, both at home and abroad, have also bought his works.
