BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed today said their party Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not compromise with the government over her release from jail.

“Khaleda Zia will not bow down to anybody as she is the leader of the country’s 16-17 crore people. She would be released either through the legal process or a street movement, in no other way,” he said.

While addressing a discussion at Jatiya Press Club, former law minister Moudud said, “In fact, it is not possible to free her without a spontaneous mass upsurge of people as she will not reach any understanding with anybody. If necessary, she will endure more sufferings in jail, but she will not make any compromise with the current regime.”

He alleged that Khaleda was convicted in the cases that were not filed “lawfully”. “The cases were filed as per the political will of the government out of its political vengeance.”

As per the Code of Criminal Procedure, he said, the High Court can grant bail to a sick, female and elderly convicted person under any stage of the case proceedings, but a 74-year-old sick Khaleda Zia is not getting bail.

“Even, condemned convicts and those who got life term imprisonment are granted bail. But, Khaleda Zia is not given it.”

The senior BNP leader said their chairperson is not getting bail as the government does not want it.

The issue of her release came into discussion when the BNP lawmakers met her inside Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Medical University (BSMMU) recently. After the meeting, BNP lawmakers urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take initiative to release her from jail.

The BNP leader said the ongoing drive against casino is a mere “eyewash” as it has no importance.

Alleging that the ruling party men were indulged in huge corruption, he demanded that all the former and incumbent ministers and lawmakers should make public their wealth statements.
