HC directs Buet to allow 3 suspended students to sit for exam

The High Court (HC) today directed the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to allow its three students, who were suspended for different terms for their alleged involvement in ragging, to sit for the term final examination to be started on December 28.

It also a separate rule asking the authorities of BUET to explain in four weeks why the decision of its Academic Council rejecting the appeals of the students against their expulsions should not be declared illegal.

The court, however, imposed a condition in the order saying that results of the expelled students will remain withheld till hearing of the rule, and if they are found guilty after hearing of the rule their results will be scrapped and if they are found innocent their results will be published.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam came up with the order and rule following a writ petition collectively filed by three students including Shobyashachi Das Dibya challenging the legality of Academic Council decision on December 18 rejecting their appeals.

Advocate AM Aminuddin appeared for the writ petitioners.

Earlier on December 24, the same HC bench issued similar orders and rules about 10 BUET students, who were expelled from halls and suspended for different terms from academic activities for their alleged involvement in ragging, Deputy Attorney General Md Noor us Sadik told The Daily Star.

He said the BUET authorities had earlier expelled the students from the halls and academic terms on charge of their involvement in ragging. The students filed separate appeals with the Academic Council of BUET against the expulsion orders.

The Academic Council at its 450 meeting on December 18 rejected their appeals, he said, adding that results of the expelled students will remain withheld till hearing of the rules.
