Calendars are interesting – at one point in history, someone comes up with a new way to break down the time it takes for the Earth to rotate around the sun once and then, humankind either adopts it like it did with the Gregorian calendar, or forgets about it like it did with the French Republican Calendar and it’s crazy idea of 10 days in a week. Emperor Akbar made a useful calendar that was suitable to the harvest cycles of the local farmers, and now we have a holiday in the middle of April so that’s nice. The precursor to our current calendar, the Julian Calendar, was discarded because, well, it was stupid. It didn’t take into account the calendar drift that would take place because the actual rotation of the Earth didn’t line up with it, where we’d gain a day every 127 years. Preposterous!  The Gregorian Calendar fixes this and we’re only going to gain an extra day every 3030 years, and that’s 1010 years from now. Begin the countdown?

I’d like to remind everyone that there’s going to be a ICC World Twenty 20 in 2020, and I’ll always be thankful to the Gregorian calendar for that. And on that note – Happy New Year!
