The lone accused of raping an 11-year-old intellectually challenged girl was arrested in Noakhali’s Subornachar upazila today.

Police arrested Rakib Hossain, 19, from Kanchan Bazaar area of Subornachar in the afternoon, our Noakhali correspondent reported.

The arrest was made following a case filed against Rakib by the victim’s mother last night, said Md Ibrahim Khalil, inspector (investigation) of Charjabbar Police Station.

Rakib, who lived near the victim’s house, went into hiding soon after the incident took place yesterday morning, police said.

After his arrest, Rakib confessed to the crime before police during interrogation, Inspector Khalil said, adding that the accused was sent to Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate around 6:00pm for his statement.

He is yet to give his confessional statement before the magistrate, at the time of reporting.

Syed Mahiuddin Abdul Azim, residential medical officer of Noakhali General Hospital, said the condition of the 11-year-old girl is not good. She is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s gynecology department, the official added.
