Teacher injured in Gopalganj accident in better condition
The condition of Willes Little Flower School and College teacher Syeda Fahima Begum, whose left arm was reattached after being severed in an accident in Gopalganj on Tuesday, has improved considerably today.
"Her condition has improved much. She was taking meals and talking to relatives," Prof Abul Kalam, director of Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute where she is being treated, told The Daily Star this evening.
"She will be kept at the intensive care unit today and possibly be shifted to a cabin tomorrow," he added.
Prof Kalam added they would keep Fahima under close observation for four or five days more.
"She may need several more surgeries to improve the functionality of her hand," he added.
On Tuesday, hours after the accident, a team of 18 doctors during a six-hour surgery reattached her left hand, which had been severed below the elbow.
Fahima and her 15 students were injured after their bus, on a study tour to Bangabandhu Mausoleum in Tungipara, hit a truck parked along the Dhaka-Khulna highway in the district. The 15 students had been treated locally and sent back to Dhaka, police said on Tuesday.
Fahima was flown to Dhaka by air ambulance and admitted into the burn institute on Tuesday afternoon.
