Couple held with 28 gold bars

Police arrested a suspected gold smuggler couple with 28 gold bars worth Tk 3 crore near Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Bandarban yesterday.

Billal Hossen Sikdar, inspector (investigation) of Naikhongchhari Police Station, said the arrestees are Mohammad Faruq, 35, and his wife Mariam Begum, 26, of Naikhongchhari's Ashartoli area.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive at Faruq's house in the upazila's Ashartoli village around 8:45pm and arrested them with the gold bars and Tk 1.99 lakh, said the OC.

The couple bought the gold bar from Myanmar, he added.

A case was filed with Naikhongchhari Police station in this regard.
