A section of Supreme Court lawyers today placed a memorandum to the chief justice requesting him to form 35 virtual High Court benches for quickly disposing of cases and to provide relief to litigants and lawyers during the lockdown.

The lawyers under the banner of Sadharan Ainjibi Parishad (General Lawyers Council) submitted the memorandum to the office concerned of Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain. They also urged him to direct the lower courts concerned to hold hearing on the petitions regarding bail, surrender and injunctions during this period.

In the memorandum signed by Sadharan Ainjibi Parishad's Convener Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, the lawyers said they are being deprived of their legal rights to move cases and litigants are not getting justice due to closure of most court functions.

After submitting the memorandum, the lawyers formed a human chain and staged demonstration at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) premises in support of their demand.

Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi told The Daily Star that they will lay siege to the residence of the chief justice if their demands are not met.

Earlier on April 4, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain decided to run the court functions on a limited scale during the restrictions.
