The High Court today adjourned -- for two weeks -- the hearing on a contempt of court petition filed against the government on charge of clearing trees and setting up restaurant at Suhrawardy Udyan, ignoring the court's 2009 verdict.

The HC bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the adjournment order after Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told the court that the liberation war affairs minister will take necessary steps to protect the environment at Suhrawardy Udyan after consulting with the environmentalists.

Besides, a writ petition involving the same issue is pending with another HC bench led by Justice Farah Mahbub, he said.

On May 11, the HC bench led by Justice Mamnoon Rahman asked Attorney General AM Amin Uddin to take necessary steps so that no tree at Suhrawardy Udyan is cut till hearing of the contempt of court petition and also fixed today (Thursday) for its further hearing.

Two Supreme Court lawyerrs Mahbubul Islam and Ripan Barai filed the contempt of court petition with the HC on May 9, seeking its directive on three government officials to cancel the activities of clearing trees and setting up restaurant at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The three officials are Liberation War Affairs Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Public Works Department's Chief Engineer Md Shamim Akhter and Chief of Architect of Bangladesh Mir Manzur Rahman, lawyer Manzill Murshid, who appeared for the petitioners, told The Daily Star.
