2013 mayhem in Dhaka: Hefajat leader Monir Hossain on 4-day remand

Monir Hossain Kashemi

A Dhaka court today placed Monir Hossain Kashemi, finance affairs secretary of Hefajat-e-Islam's now-dissolved central committee, on a four-day remand in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter passed the order after Md Forman Ali, a sub-inspector of Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Kashemi and other FIR-named accused carried out the mayhem in Paltan, Shapla Chatter and other places in the capital on May 5, 2013. So, he needs to be remanded to find out whereabouts of others responsible, the IO added.

On the other hand, defence for the accused, submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer on grounds that their client was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him.

Upon hearing both the sides, the magistrate rejected the defence pleas and placed him on a four-day remand for quizzing about the incident.

Kashemi was arrested by Detective Branch of Gulshan Division police last night from Dhaka's Baridhara area.

Kashemi, also joint secretary general of the Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, was also found to be involved in the violence in Narayanganj during the protest against the visit of the Indian prime minister in March this year.
