BIWTA drive at Shitalakkhya river: More than 50 illegal establishments evicted

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has evicted more than 50 illegal establishments including dockyard, buildings, and mud-houses on the bank of Shitalakkhya river in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj today.

The eviction drive was carried out from Noapara to Kazipara areas of Rupganj upazila from 10am to 4pm today under the leadership of BIWTA Executive Magistrate Shovon Rangsa, reports our Narayanganj correspondent quoting Sheikh Masud Kamal, joint director of BIWTA's Narayanganj River Port.

"The operation was carried out to free the Shitalakkhya river from illegal occupation. More than 50 illegal structures including 16 dockyards, one two-story building, dredger pipe, and mud-houses have been evicted," said Sheikh Masud Kamal.

"Five boundary pillars have been placed on the bank of the river. The operation to eradicate all illegal structures on both sides of the river will continue," Masud added.

Eviction workers including Deputy Director of Narayanganj River Port of BIWTA, Mobarak Hossain, were present during the drive.
