Tree theft thwarted in Kulaura forest
Kulaura upazila administration in a raid yesterday thwarted an act of organised tree theft and seized dozens of chopped down tree trunks from hills of Muroichhara forest in Kulaura upazila.
It took five tractor trolleys to bring the logs to the Forest Department office premises in Kulaura.
Forest officials led by Kulaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) ATM Farhad Chowdhury confiscated the tree trunks after they raided the area upon getting a tip-off that an organised gang of criminals were cutting down Akashmoni trees from the hills in the forest.
Rezaul Haque, range officer of Kulaura Forest Department, said a group of criminals were felling trees from the hills of Tattiuli area under Kulaura forest beat.
Yesterday, upon receiving secret information, the Kulaura UNO along with a team of officials went to the spot and found over eight dozen tree stumps of expensive trees.
The tree thieves however fled the scene before the team arrived there, Rezaul added.
UNO ATM Farhad said they were under the process of filing a case in this connection and the logs were handed over to the custody of Range Officer Rezaul Haque.
