Liton Babu has changed his life by flower cultivation on his ten decimals of paternal land at remote Purbo Chaponhati village in Sundarganj upazila under the district.

Son of a poor farmer, Liton graduated in 1996 through struggles.

"I had a dream to bring smile to my poor family. I appeared several interviews and tests, even personally approached different employers for a job, but all in vain," said Liton.

"Frustrated, I returned home. In 2012, I started flower cultivation on two bighas of land. I set up a nursery on two bighas of land beside our house. As my earning increased, I employed five people to look after the garden.

"A large number of customers from fur-flung areas visit my garden to collect flowers.

"Monthly turnover from the nursery is around Tk 30 thousand. Earlier it was difficult to maintain the six-member family including my parents and two children. By the grace of Almighty, we are passing happy days now," said Liton.

Liton's father Rabindranath said, "Earlier I rebuked my son for not getting job. Now I feel proud of his success as a self-employed flower grower."

Liton, who grows local as well as foreign varieties of flowers, has also started planting different medicinal plants in his nursery and getting good response from the buyers.

"Visiting my nursery, many jobless young men expressed desire to start nursery business in their area. I often suggest jobless educated people to find ways of self-employment," he said.
