Bangladeshi automobile makers do not have proper policy support, design and drawing to locally produce two-, three- and four-wheelers, businesses said today.
The government should come up with a proper policy to develop the sector, 99 per cent of which is occupied by foreign brands, they said.
They made the remarks at the first meeting of the standing committee on automobile manufacturers and assemblers of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) held at the FBCCI office in Dhaka's Motijheel area.
Addressing the programme, FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said Bangladesh has been gradually lowering its dependency on imports and strengthening capacity of the local manufacturers.
He also said proper branding of capacity of the local manufacturers would help in attracting new investments and create employment as well.
Md Habib Ullah Dawn, director in charge of the standing committee of the FBCCI, called for ensuring a competitive market of quality products.
He also urged the government for solving the problems related to policies on the automobile industry.
Hafizur Rahman Khan, chairman of the standing committee and chairman of Runner Group, urged the businessmen to work on sector-wise development and prepare draft plans which would be submitted to the government through the FBCCI.
