King cobra rescued from CU campus, python in Sitakunda
A king cobra and a python, two large snake species, have been rescued from Chittagong University campus and Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram.
On Chittagong University campus, a 12 feet long king cobra, weighing 20kg, was rescued from the doctors' colony next to the gymnasium at 1:50 pm today, Abdur Razzak, acting chief security officer of the university, told our CU correspondent.
King cobra is a very venomous snake and not very common on the CU campus. They live in deep forests and eat snakes, said Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury, assistant professor at CU's zoology department.
Rafiqul Islam, a student of the zoology department at CU and fellow at Venom Research Centre of Chattogram Medical College (CMC), said they rescued the snake and collected it for research.
The king cobra will be released after completing the research, he added.
In Sitakunda upazila, the 15 feet-long python, weighing around 22kg, was rescued from the Madambibirhat area in Bhatiary union yesterday at 2:00 pm, our Chattogram correspondent reports quoting Mohammed Shahen Shah Nowshad, a forest official in Fauzdarhat.
Locals first discovered the python and informed the forest department. On information, forest officials went to the spot and rescued the python, he said.
The python was later released to the forest of Bhatiary Garden, the official also said, adding that it might have come to the locality in search of food.
