Snapchat to share ad revenue with content creators
The instant messaging app Snapchat is reportedly introducing a brand new feature in which content creators can earn money from ads. Whenever an ad is integrated into a content creator's Snapchat Story, a certain percentage of the revenue will be shared by the said creator.
This ad revenue feature will be available only to specific content creators called Snap Stars. Snap Stars are accounts officially verified by Snapchat.
According to reports, the app will utilise an algorithm that will calculate the frequency and views of Snapchat stories. The respective Snap Star receive a certain cut of the ad revenue based on the engagment and reach of the content they posted.
Spotlight, a TikTok-like feature on Snapchat, has been receiving focus as well. Snapchat recently announced that it would pay over US$1 million to online influencers to create high-quality Spotlight content.
The company has also stated that in 2021, an upward of US$250 million was paid to Snapchat content creators for producing and promoting engaging content across the platform.
Reports suggest that this move towards sharing monetisation of the app is an attempt at increasing Snapchat's popularity among daily users amidst competitors such as TikTok.
