Find sustainable ways to ensure road safety
News of deaths in road accidents, reported in newspapers every day, is shocking. In 2018, Bangladesh witnessed a street movement where people demanded road safety. The demand was rational, the echo of which was heard again when a garbage truck in Dhaka ran over a student on November 24 last year. Between 2015 and 2020, at least 26,279 road accidents were reported to have taken place countrywide, resulting in 38,635 deaths, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. According to the Road Safety Foundation, from 2020 to 2021, incidents of road accidents, accident deaths, and the number of injured people increased by 13.43 percent, 15.75 percent, and 1.20 percent, respectively. Reckless presence of three-wheelers on the highways, unfit vehicles, reckless driving by truck drivers and bus drivers, traffic rule violation, etc are some of the main reasons behind such high rates of road accidents in Bangladesh. The authorities concerned need to find sustainable ways to eliminate these problems and ensure road safety across Bangladesh, so that no more avoidable deaths occur on our roads and highways.
