Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj grabbed a seven-wicket haul as a batting meltdown saw Bangladesh suffer a heavy 220-run defeat against South Africa early on the fifth day of their first Test at Kingsmead in Durban today.

The Proteas go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series as the Tigers were all out for 53 runs after 19 overs in their second innings -- their second-lowest total in Test history. This is also the lowest total recorded in Tests at this venue.    

Chasing a 274-run target, Bangladesh resumed the final day's play on 11 for three after suffering a top-order malfunction late on Day 4. The Tigers could not even survive an hour on the fifth day as spinners Maharaj and Simon Harmer ripped through the visitors' batting line-up. Maharaj finished with figures of seven for 32 in 10 overs.   

Mushfiqur Rahim departed in the first over as Maharaj trapped him plumb in front. The experienced batter opted for a review but headed to the pavilion for a duck.

Liton Das (2) and Yasir Ali (5) came and went, both scalped by the left-arm orthodox spinner. Liton's dismissal was a soft one, as the wicket-keeper batter drove straight to mid-on fielder while Yasir was superbly bowled by Maharaj despite the batter attempting a forward defensive stroke.

Harmer too joined in the act as he forced an edge off Mehedi Miraz (0) to slip before enforcing a stumping dismissal off Najmul Shanto (26) to grab his seventh wicket of the match.   

Taskin was the last to depart, on 14, the innings' second-highest scorer, as Maharaj completed his seven-wicket haul.
