Nahid murder: DB claims ‘positive development’ in suspects’ arrest
Detectives today said that they would soon be able to share information on arrest of suspects in Nahid murder case. Nahid Mia was beaten up and hacked during clashes between Dhaka College students and shopkeepers in New Market area on April 19.
"We have identified some people through video footage in connection with the incident. Dhaka College hostels are closed now. Some suspects went into hiding. Multiple teams are trying to trace them," DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam told a press briefing at DMP Media Centre today.
He hoped that they would be able to give some "positive news" soon.
After identifying around a dozen suspects, police were focusing their investigation on two individuals – Kaiyum and Emon Bashar – both activists of Dhaka College's Chhatra League unit.
Kaiyum is a Dhaka College student who first hit Nahid and Emon was the one who carried out the final attack on the 19-year-old deliveryman on April 19, according to video footage and photos.
Nahid died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital that night.
Video footage of the incident went viral on social media. The Daily Star journalists, who were present near the scene, also took photos of the gruesome attack. The footage and the photos show Nahid lying still in front of Nur Jahan Super Market and then a young man in a black helmet hacking him indiscriminately with a machete. The man in the black helmet was identified as Emon, a second-year student of Bangla at Dhaka College.
The footage also showed Kaiyum in a blue T-shirt with white stripes.
On Sunday, a team of the DB police seized two mobile phones belonging to Emon from his room at Dhaka College's International Hostel.
