Shahed Ali talks ‘Refugee’

Beginning his career with noted theatre troupe Prachyanat, Shahed Ali ventured into the silver screen with the Goutam Ghose directorial film "Moner Manush". After earning accolades for his performance in Ashfaque Nipun's well-received web series "Mohanagar", the actor was last seen in "Dour'.

Shahed Ali is all set for his upcoming web production "Refugee", which will be releasing on Hoichoi on June 10. He is also looking forward to his film "Omanush".

We caught up with the actor to know more about "Refugee" and his other upcoming projects.

You were seen in a completely new look in "Dour". How challenging was your role in the production?

I played Bullet Rajib in "Dour", a serial killer residing in Old Dhaka. The role was very challenging and I had to be in this character for a long time.

This was the first time I had to trim my hair for a character. After shooting for "Dour", I had to wait for four months for my hair to grow back, and thus was unable to take up any new project.

I believe that my hard work paid off, as I started receiving praises for my performance in the project, from both home and abroad.

The best reaction I received was from my son. He said that the character did not look like me (his father) at all. Instead he was impelled to believe that he was looking at Bullet Rajib on the screen. My wife actress Deepa Khandakar also praised me dearly for this role.

How was your experience with "Mohanagar"?

"Mohanagar" is amongst some of the most appreciated and critically acclaimed productions in recent times. Its buzz mesmerised audiences in both my country and West Bengal. People still talk about this production and I find it very inspiring.

I played the role of Amzad Khan -- that character was the heart of the production.

Are you looking to invest more time on web productions for the time being?

My job is to act, and that's what I have been doing so far. The medium really does not matter to me. Nevertheless, I am being approached for web projects these days, and I think this platform has a bright future.

My production "Refugee" will be released soon, where I will be seen playing a person of Bihari descent. I had previously worked in Sumon Anowar's "Sadarghater Tiger", where I played the role of a political leader.

My web series "Kaiser", directed by Tanim Noor, is also set to release soon. I will appear as a police officer in the Hoichoi original project.

What kind of roles do you enjoy playing the most?

I have always embraced any role that I found interesting. I have been doing so since the beginning of my career. Each character I play only leaves me with one thought – how could I have done this role better?

I look to break my barriers and never put my personal nature before my role. Instead, I try to take the shape of the character I am to play on the screen.

Despite such busy schedules, you still manage to regularly perform in theatre.

Of course! I have been with Prachyanat since 1997. I have a responsibility towards this medium. Theatre was beside me when I had nothing. Thus, I won't leave its side till my health permits.
