The Birth of Art

Northbrook Hall, located inside the famous Laalkuthi, at Farashgonj, on the north bank of the Buriganga River, is the first of its kind in Dhaka. The stage wings, seating structure and the high ceilings reflect the architectural styles from the British period. A visit to the hall showcases European styled doors and windows, both elaborate and elegant.

"Many actors and actresses started off their careers from here," says Shourab, the middle-aged supervisor of the Northbrook Hall. "People would come from all over to watch great names like Kabori, Tele Samad and many more to perform. In the evenings, after performances and shows, actors, writers and singers would often gather around for a cup of tea and discuss politics, newspaper articles, a new form of dance or music and so much more."

Despite the fact that the 130-year-old Northbrook Hall requires maintenance and heavy repairs, the walls, the empty stage and the staircase inside speak of hard work, creativity and literature. "The hall is still as good as it used to be!" assures Shourab. "A bit of fixing here and there and I am sure the contemporary artists, poets and writers would visit and make this place as jubilant as it used to be at one time."
