An activist of the Dhaka University Bangladesh Chhatra League unit has been accused of eve-teasing and slapping a female student of a private university at TSC. Besides, a shop employee of Hakim Chattar has also accused the same BCL activist of snatching his money and phone.

The accused is Nazmul, a fourth-year student of the Social Welfare department of the university. He is a follower of DU Chhatra League President Mariam Sohan, reports our DU correspondent.

He assaulted a young woman in front of TSC around 3:00 am today (November 1, 2022), according to eyewitnesses.

The victim is a law student at a private university in the capital

Eyewitnesses said the student arrived at Dhaka University campus around 2:45 am with two of her friends and posed for some photos in front of the Raju sculpture. Suddenly, Nazmul came and wanted to know why they went there so late at night.

During one part of the conversation, Nazmul violently snatched her phone and slapped her three times, and said, "Do you want to buy this campus?"

At least four witnesses who saw the incident confirmed it to our DU correspondent, saying they rushed to the scene after seeing the girl being harassed.

The victim said, "I was snapping pictures with my friends in front of the sculpture on campus after celebrating my birthday. Two boys got off their bikes at that point and began interrogating us. With me, he used abusive language. When I resisted, they eve-teased and slapped me."

When contacted, Nazmul said, "What was the student doing on campus at that hour of the night?"

"She slapped me first, so I slapped her back," he claimed.

Meanwhile, after the incident, two members of the proctorial team arrived on the spot with Abul Bashar, a shopkeeper at Hakim Chattar.

Abul Bashar said, "Nazmul attacked me around 10 pm yesterday while I was travelling through Suhrawardy Udyan, and he seized my phone, wallet, and headphones. My salary was in my wallet."

Following Bashar's accusation, the proctorial team tried to capture Nazmul, but he fled scene.

DU Proctor Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani told The Daily Star, "Since the student belongs to another institution, she has been asked to take the help of police. The university will provide all necessary assistance in this regard."
