Bangladesh wins Gold Medal at International Science & Invention Fair 2022

'Team Atlas', a robotics team composed of Bangladeshi university students, has become Gold Medalist at the International Science & Invention Fair (ISIF) 2022. This is the first time a Bangladeshi team has achieved a Gold Medal in any category in the history of ISIF. 

Team Atlas became Gold Medalists in the Technology Category (University) for their project named 'Fremo - A Farming Robot'. This ISIF Gold Medal-winning team consisted of Sunny Jubayer (BRAC University) as team leader and Mir Tanzid Ahmed (BRAC University) as administrator.

The team members were Jannatul Ferdous Fabin (BRAC University), Mir Sazid Hassan (North South University), Mahtab Newaz (North South University), MD. Tanjir Arafat (BAF Shaheen College, Kurmitola), Khandoker Maruf Bin Islam (BUET), and Md Fahim Shahriar (Dhaka University). The team was advised by Md Saiful Islam (Senior Lecturer, CSE Department, BRAC University).

The competition was held in Bali, Indonesia, from November 1 to 5, 2022. It is annually organised by the Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA). This year, a total of 32 countries and 614 teams participated in various segments of the competition. The result was announced at the prize-giving ceremony held on November 4, 2022, at the University of Pendidikan Ganesha in Bali, Indonesia.

"Representing Bangladesh and winning the Gold Medal for the first time for the nation is a feeling we cannot express in words," says Sunny Jubayer. Mir Tanzid Ahmed adds, "At first, when we started preparing, it was whether we were dreaming too big - but now it seems we are the winners because we indeed dreamt big!"

Sunny Jubayer shared their vision for creating their project in the first place, "We wanted to connect with people from all industries by providing innovative and low-cost technology. Our solution Fremo is exactly that."

Mahtab Newaz adds, "I am very delighted to contribute to our project and work with robotics and introducing our country to the whole world with our tech solutions."

To explain what the project work exactly is, Mir Tanzid Ahmed shares, "We created Fremo, a robot that can provide AI solutions in the workplace as well as sense various types of data from the soil for cultivation."

The result was announced at the prize-giving ceremony held on November 4, 2022, at the University of Pendidikan Ganesha in Bali, Indonesia.

Team Atlas also previously reached the finals and ranked 4th overall at World Robotics Championship 2022.
