On January 17, 2014, legendary actress Suchitra Sen passed away. Her enigmatic personality—which had retreated from public view in 1978—and her self-induced solitude for 36 years only added a level of mystique to her legacy.
The undisputed queen of Bengali cinema had such strong dominance over the film industry that she had even said no to stalwarts like Satyajit Ray and Raj Kapoor.
The 'Mahanayika' of the Bengali film industry, Suchitra Sen has given numerous hits alongside Uttam Kumar, in films. The golden pair worked together in almost 30 films. They were first seen together in "Sharey Chuattar."

1. Suchitra Sen's first Bengali film was "Shesh Kotha", which is still unreleased to date. The movie was made in 1952 and did not make it to theatres.
2. In 1963, Suchitra Sen was recognised at the Moscow Film Festival for her film "Saat Pake Bandha". She is the first Bengali actress to win an international award.
3. There have been multiple adaptations of "Devdas" in Bollywood. However, Suchitra Sen was the first actress to take on the role of Parvati. This would also be the actress' first Bollywood film.
4. Suchitra Sen refused to accept Dadasaheb Phalke Award. According to the rules, she had to go to New Delhi to receive the award. However, the actress rejected the award because she did not want to come out in front of the public.
5. As Suchitra Sen was not available on the shooting dates for Satyajit Ray's movie "Chaudhurani", she had to say no to the legendary filmmaker. Satyajit Ray was so heartbroken that he never even went on to create the film.
