Rubaiyat Hossain's 'Shimu' to be screened in 64 districts

Tomorrow at 7 pm, Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain's third feature film "Shimu" is going to be screened in every Shilpakala Academy of the 64 districts of the country.

The story of the struggle and success of the determined women working in the RMG sector has been told in this film. It also sheds light on how the garment sector has played a vital role in empowering women and helped them achieve self-reliance in Bangladesh.

This film is inspired by the true story of labour union leader Dalia Akhter, who after facing difficult conditions at work, decides to start a union with her co-workers. 

"Shimu" was released in Bangladesh on March 11 last year on the occasion of Women's Day. It earned a lot of appreciation in the international film festivals and won the Arte International prize for its screenplay.

Initially the film was titled as "Made in Bangladesh", and just before its release in Bangladesh the title was changed to "Shimu".

An interesting information regarding the film is that besides Rubaiyat directing the film, the majority of the crew were female. 

The film casts Rikita Nandini Shimu who played the titular role alongside, Indian actress Shahana Goswami, amd talented actors like Shatabdi Wadud, Mostafa Monwar, Novera Rahman, Deepanwita Martin, and Parvin Paru among others.

The film also participated in Locarno Film Festival in 2016, in the Open Doors Hub section where the film got its way to international funding. 

After its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, the film was screened at the 63rd BFI London Film Festival. Besides, the film has been appreciated and awarded in various international film festivals. Rikita Nandini Shimu won the best actress award at the Sainte-Luz film festival in France. It received the Interfedi Award at the Torino Baturin Film Festival in Italy and 3 awards including the Best Audience and Jury Awards at the Amiens International Film Festival in France.

In December 2019, the film was commercially released as "Made in Bangladesh" in various cinemas in France, Denmark, Canada and Portugal. After 2020, the film was screened commercially in cinemas in Mexico, China, Singapore, Australia, Turkey, Japan and Germany after showing in various theaters in America.

Produced by Khana Talkies of Bangladesh and France's La Films The Apres-Midi, "Shimu" is produced by Francois Daktema and Ashiq Mostafa and co-produced by Peter Hildal, Pedro Borges, Adnan Imtiaz Ahmed and Rubaiyat Hossain. And the distribution and international sales representative of the film is Pyramid Films of France.
