Shakib and Co hand England unwanted record
Bangladesh became the only side in history to beat a T20 World Cup-winning side in their first match upon returning to action in the format as the Shakib Al Hasan-led side bagged a comprehensive six-wicket victory in their T20I series opener against England in Chattogram yesterday.
Since the tournament's inaugural edition in 2007, eight installments of the T20 World Cup have witnessed six nations who went on to taste glory; with England (2010, 2022) and the West Indies (2012, 2016) winning it twice, while India (2007), Pakistan (2009), Sri Lanka (2014), Australia (2021) winning it once.
The closest any side came to previously pull off the Tigers' feat were India in 2016 when they suffered an agonisingly narrow one-run defeat despite scoring 244 in their chase against the West Indies, the 2016 T20 World Cup champions.
In their first match since winning the T20 World Cup in Australia, Jos Buttler and his troops also tasted another bitter outcome as they lost their first T20 encounter against the Tigers. However, the two sides have only locked horns once prior to the Chattogram T20I.
England will now look to keep the series alive and win the penultimate match of the series on Sunday in Mirpur, Dhaka.
