Arrest of Prothom Alo journo: JU students stage demo, demand release by Sunday
Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for around an hour and demanded that Prothom Alo reporter Samsuzzaman Shams, who was arrested in a DSA case, be released by Sunday.
Around 50 students started a procession around 2:45pm from the university's Murad Chattar area. They later marched to the Dhaka-Aricha highway and started demonstrating there, reports our staff correspondent from the spot.
They were chanting "Free shams unconditionally", " Scrap Digital Security Act", and other slogans.
The students left the highway around 3:30pm with an ultimatum to release Shams by Sunday. Otherwise they would go for tougher movement, said one of the protesters, Prapti Taposhi, a student of JU's economics department
Members of law enforcement had taken position at the university's Dairy Gate, hour before the demonstration.
Shams, nearly 35 hours after he was picked up from the Savar residence, was produced before a Dhaka court yesterday that sent him to jail in a case filed with Ramna Police Station.
He was sued in another DSA case with Tejgaon Police Station a couple of hours before he was picked up early on Wednesday.
