LGRD ministry suspends Babu's chairmanship
Mahmudul Alam Babu, who masterminded the murder of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim, has been suspended from the post of chairman of a union parishad in Jamalpur.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives suspended him after Rab arrested him in connection with the killing.
Babu was the chairman of Sadhurpara Union Parishad in Jamalpur's Bakshiganj upazila.
It has been decided to serve a show-cause notice asking why he should not be removed from the local government department in connection with the brutal murder, says a ministry press release.
The chairman has been asked to reply within 10 working days of receiving the letter, it added.
A team of Rab arrested Babu from Panchagar area on Saturday. He is now on a five-day remand.
Earlier, Babu was suspended from the Awami League. He was the general secretary of the union's Awami League.
In a press briefing on Saturday, Rab said Babu masterminded the murder because of a personal vendetta against him over news reports.
The Rab director said that 10-12 people took part in the attack on Nadim, Jamalpur district correspondent of Banglanews24.com and also the Bakshiganj upazila correspondent of Ekattor TV.
Babu led the attack staying near the scene, Rab Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin told the press conference at the Rab Media Centre in the capital's Karwan Bazar.
Nadim died on Thursday at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, a day after he was attacked and injured allegedly by some supporters of Babu in Bakshiganj in Jamalpur.
