World leaders should take effective actions to address climate change: Sultana Kamal
World leaders should take effective actions to address climate change, rather than being limited to only discussions, eminent rights activist advocate Sultana Kamal said today.
She made these comments while addressing a human chain yesterday in the capital's Agargaon.
Climate activists in New York will march to the United Nations headquarters tomorrow, demanding fossil fuel-free climate justice from world leaders, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly and the UNSG Climate Ambition Summit 2023.
Many organisations around the world are organising various programs under the title "Global Day of Action to End Fossil Fuels for Climate Justice" from September 15-17.
Like them, the Asian Peoples Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) and the Asian Energy Network are also coordinating various programs in countries across the Asian continent.
In Bangladesh, Sultana Kamal, also an advisor of the former caretaker government, inaugurated some programmes across the country.
She said, there is no alternative to phasing out various types of non-renewable energy projects to prevent global warming.
Due to the non-cooperation of developed countries, it is not possible to take a collective initiative to get out of such environmentally destructive activities.
"Through all these programmes, we are calling on policymakers to take necessary steps to address climate change. At the same time, we call on world leaders to take effective steps to address climate change, rather than being limited to discussions."
