Sodhi fifer helps NZ to 86-run win over Bangladesh

New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi picked up his maiden ODI five-wicket haul to help crush Bangladesh by 86 runs in the second of the three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Sodhi's career-best figures in ODIs saw him take six wickets for 39 runs and helped the Blackcaps to their first win against the Tigers since 2008, during a span in which New Zealand failed to win on seven occasions.

For Bangladesh, the two experienced returnees Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad were top scorers with 44 and 49-run knocks respectively. Tamim's 58-ball 44 saw him hit seven boundaries before gloving one to the wicketkeeper while trying lap sweep Sodhi and Mahmudullah's dismissal in the 36th over had sealed Bangladesh's fate in the second match.

Mahmudullah got dismissed on a delivery that had no merit. A short ball from Cole McConchie that tuned down the leg side had Mahmudullah reach for it from afar. He could've hit it over the fielder at short-fine leg or even hit it for a six but he could only manage to give Finn Allen a catching practice.

His 76-ball 49-run knock saw him just one run away from reaching 5,000 ODI runs which would've made him only the fourth Bangladesh batter to achieve the feat but the 37-year-old, who held the key in Bangladesh chasing down New Zealand's 254, got dismissed in the 36th over to leave the Tigers at 149 for seven.

With a potential spot up for grabs in the New Zealand squad on the condition that Tim Southee can't recover in time from his surgery, Kyle Jamieson, who scalped two wickets giving away 32 runs in the match, intensified his position to get the nod.

Skipper Lockie Ferguson and and off-spinner McCondhie picked up one wicket each.
