Riyad ton in vain as Tigers lose by 149 runs against Proteas
Bangladesh batter Mahmudullah Riyad scored a third World Cup century, the most by a Bangladesh batter, but it had little effect as the Tigers succumbed to a 149-run loss against South Africa in their World Cup encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today.
Riyad managed a run-a-ball 111 notching up his fourth ODI ton but his knock could only help Bangladesh reduce the margin of defeat as the Tigers were bundled out for 233 in pursuit of South Africa's daunting 382 for five.
Proteas pacer Gerald Coetzee picked up three wickets, while pacer partners Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Lizaad Williams scalped two each.
Earlier, South Africa piled on the runs after opting to bat first as they posted 382 for five, courtesy of Quinton de Kock's 140-ball 174 and Heinrich Klaasen's 49-ball 90.
Mahmudullah departs after scoring record ton
Bangladesh batter Mahmudullah Riyad brought up his fourth ODI ton but is will help the only to curtail the margin of a likely defeat against South Africa in Mumbai today.
The century is Mahmudullah's third in a World Cup, the most by a Bangladesh batter followed by Shakib Al Hasan with two and Mushfiqur Rahim, who has one century in a World Cup.
He took 104 ball to each the landmark and was dismissed shortly after when he tried to take on Gerald Coetzee over deep cover. He put away 11 fours and two sixes for his run-a-ball 111.
Bangladesh on the brink of defeat with fall of seventh wicket
Bangladesh are on the verge of a heavy defeat at the hands of South Africa as they lost Nasum Ahmed, their seventh wicket, in the 29th over, with the score on 122 in pursuit of the Proteas' 382 for five in Mumbai today.
Nasum after scoring a run-a-ball 19 chipped one back to pacer Gerald Coetzee who scalped his third wicket of the match.
This broke a 41-stand with Mahmudullah Riyad, who remained unbeaten on 39.
Liton's 44-ball 22 comes to an end as Tigers lose five
Bangladesh opener Liton Das's stay at the crease ended when he failed to make contact to a regulation Kagiso Rabada length delivery aimed at the stumps in their World Cup encounter against South Africa in Mumbai today.
He was trapped lbw after scoring a 44-ball 22 and challenged the umpire's decision in hopeful review but replays showed the ball would've crashed onto the stumps. This left the Tigers reeling at five down for 58 after the end of the 15th over in pursuit of South Africa 382 for five.
Mushfiqur joins the procession as Tigers lose four
Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim joined the procession of wickets falling as he skied one straight to deep third man in the 12th over of the innings against South Africa in Mumbai today.
Muushfiqur tried to cut a short and wide delivery bowled by pacer Gerald Coetzee but could only top edge it to the substitute fielder Andile Phehlukwayo at deep third to leave the Tigers four down for 42 runs.
This brought Mahmudullah Riyad to the crease, with opener Liton Das unbeaten on 15 at the other end.
Shakib fails with bat as Tigers lose three
Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan stay at the crease was short as he was nicked off in his fourth delivery bowled by South Africa pacer Lizaad Williams after scoring just one run in Mumbai today.
The left-handed batter was lured into a drive which he could not resist but could only manage to nick it to Heinrich Klaasen behind the stumps, who grabbed his third catch of the match.
This left the Tigers three down for 32 runs after the completion of the eighth over as they look to chip away at South Africa's daunting 382-run target.
Bangladesh lost their first three wickets in eight deliveries, with two going down in the seventh over bowled by Marco Jansen.
Tanzid, Shanto depart in consecutive deliveries
Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim and number three batter Najmul Hossain Shanto departed in back-to-back deliveries in the seventh over of the innings bowled by South Africa pacer Marco Jansen to leave the Tigers two down for 30 in pursuit of 382 in Mumbai today.
Both the batters were dismissed in similar fashion as they got nicked off down the leg side.
Tanzid (12) looked to hook a short ball going down the leg side, while Shanto missed out on a an easy boundary as he edged one to the keeper on his very first ball.
De Kock, Klaasen bludgeon Bangladesh
Heinrich Klaseen's blistering 90 off 49 balls after Quinton De Kock's brutal 174 off 140 balls powered South Africa to a daunting 382-4 against Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today.
This is the second highest score Bangladesh have conceded in a World Cup match.
De Kock continued his incredible form in the World Cup, hitting his third ton in five innings and in the process overtaking Virat Kohli as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 405 runs.
After De Kock departed, Klaseen unleashed a barrage against the Bangladesh bowlers, hitting sixes and fours almost at will.
The Bangladesh had started well in the innings, restricting South Africa to 44-2 after the first powerplay, thanks to early strikes from Shoriful Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz.
De Kock and Aiden Markram repaired the initial damage with a 131-run partnership. After Markram departed for 60, Klaseen joined De Kock and started form where he had left off against England.
The 142-run partnership off 87 balls between De Kock and Klaseen followed by a quickfire 65-run stand between Klaseen and David Miller (34 off 15 balls) took South Africa to yet another daunting score in this World Cup.
De Kock departs for 174
Hasan Mahmud put an end on Quinton de Kock's barrage, dismissing the opener for 174 off 140 balls as South Africa are 317-4 after 46 overs in Mumbai today.
De Kock departed trying to hit his eighth six in the innings, as he got caught at the edge of the ropes in backward point by Nasum Ahmed.
The wicket gave the Tigers some relief as it ended a 142-run partnership off just 87 balls between De Kock and Klaseen.
South Africa cross 300 with 6 overs to go
Bangladesh are staring at a huge target to chase in Mumbai, as South Africa go past 300 with six overs to go with 150 up Quinton de Kock and 50 up Heinrich Klaseen looking in destructive mood.
De Kock hit a couple of sixes and fours against Shakib in the 43rd over to reach his 150 off just 128 balls.
After Shakib's 22-run over, Shoriful leaked 17 off the 44th, with De Kock hitting a couple of boundaries and Klaseen smashing a towering six over mid-wicket.
De Kock and Klaseen are batting on 168 and 50 respectively and the Bangladeshi bowlers are looking like fish out of water against the South African barrage.
South Africa marching towards huge total
South Africa are marching towards a daunting total against Bangladesh, reaching 248-3 after 41 overs with centurion Quinton de Kock and in-form Heinrich Klaasen going great guns in Mumbai today.
De Kock is batting on off 116 balls, and has overtaken Virat Kohli as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 355 runs.
Klaasen has also raced to 42 off just 31 balls with one four and three sixes.
Bangladesh are in a desperate need for wickets, otherwise South Africa are looking set for a huge total.
De Kock hits 3rd World Cup ton
Quinton de Kock completed his third century in the ongoing edition of the World Cup, as South Africa are setting up a base for a final assault against Bangladesh in the last 10 overs.
De Kock nudged a single off Nasum Ahmed in the first ball of the 35th over to reach the three figure mark off 101 balls.

After 35 overs, South Africa are 196-3.
Shakib breaks the partnership
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan broke the 131-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram, by dismissing the latter for 60 off 69 balls as South Africa lose their third wicket for 167 in the 31st over in their ICC World Cup match in Mumbai today.
Markram tried to take on Shakib over the long off boundary but miscued his shot and got caught by Liton Das.
The wicket brought Henry Klassen to the middle, who hit a rollicking 109 off 67 balls in their last match against England at the same ground.
After 31 overs, South Africa are 169-3. De Kock is eight runs away from completing his third century in this year's World Cup.
Shakib now has 40 wickets in World Cups, the joint second highest amongst spinners.
De Kock-Markram complete century stand
Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram have consolidated the innings after Bangladesh's early strikes, completing a 100-run stand for the fourth wicket and are slowly but surely setting up a launching pad for the Proteas in the ICC World Cup encounter in Mumbai today.
De Kock is nearing a century, batting on 75 off 73 balls, after 26 overs with Markram batting on 51 at the other end. After losing two wickets for 36, South Africa have now reached 141-2.
De Kock reaches 50 as South Africa consolidate
South Africa have recovered with a 50-run stand after being two down for 36 in their ICC World Cup fixture against Bangladesh in Mumbai today.
Opener Quinton de Kock brought up his 23rd ODI fifty before the Proteas were 113 for two after 22 overs.
De Kock struck four sixes and as many boundaries so far and has stand-in skipper Aiden Markram in the middle. The duo stitched a fifty partnership for the third wicket and appears content to just keep the scorecard ticking and set the platform for the likes of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller.
Seven bowlers have featured so far for Bangladesh, with Mahmudullah Riyad the latest to roll his arm over.
Shoriful, Miraz strike early as 1st powerplay goes to Tigers
Pacer Shoriful Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz struck early for Bangladesh, as South Africa are two down inside eight overs after opting to bat first in Mumbai.
Shoriful gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough in the seventh over, rattling Reeza Hendricks' middle stump with an in-swinger which straightened just enough to sneak in between the gap between the bat and pad.
Hendricks departure for 12 ended the opening partnership on 33.
One-down Rassie van Der Dussen then got trapped lbw by Miraz in the following over, as the Proteas were two down with just 36 runs on the board.
South Africa reached 44-2 at the end of the first powerplay with Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram batting on 24 and six respectively.
Bangladesh drop an early chance
Bangladesh missed a golden opportunity to make an early breakthrough as Tanzid Hasan Tamim dropped Reeza Hendricks at slip off the bowling of Mehedi Hasan Miraz in the second over after being asked to bowl first by South Africa.
Miraz came into the attack in the second over, a change from the two pacers upfront approach of the Tigers so far in the tournament.
The change in tactics nearly paid dividends as he managed to induce an outside edge off the blade of Hendricks in his fifth ball.
Hendricks tried to cut a ball which was too close to him, ended up slicing the ball straight to Tanzid at slip. The young opener, however, couldn't hold onto the chance, giving Hendricks a life on one.
The Bangladesh bowlers have managed to keep it relatively tight in the first five overs of the powerplay, as South Africa have reached 25 for naught.
Earlier, skipper Shakib Al Hasan returned to the Bangladesh XI in place of Towhid Hridoy after missing their previous match against India in Pune owing to injury.
South Africa also made one change, replacing Lungi Ngidi with pacer Lizaad Williams.
