Nilgai found dead in Dinajpur
A rare Nilgai was found dead at a village in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur yesterday.
Veterinary experts in Dinajpur termed the cause of death as cardiac failure.
Niranjan Roy, beat officer of Singra Forest in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur Divisional Forest Zone, said locals of Palanogaon village under Sator union of Birganj found the Nilgai dead in a nearby local pond yesterday morning.
Later the forest staffers recovered the body and sent it to local veterinary hospital for autopsy.
Officials said the Nilgai came to Bangladesh from India through the border of Thakurgaon or Panchagarh and ended up in Birganj upazila in search of food.
It will be buried in Birganj once the autopsy is completed.
Primarily the vet officials deemed that the Nilgai died from cardiac arrest, said Niranjan quoting veterinarian surgeons in Birganj.
Nilgain, the largest Asian antelope species native to South Asia, was declared locally extinct in the 1930s in Bangladesh due to habitat loss and hunting.
