Police early today arrested a youth accused of attempting to rape a six years' old child in Chougachha upazila in Jashore.

Jewel Rana, 20, of Sukhpukuria was arrested from Andulia village in the upazila around 2:00am, our Benapole correspondent reports.

The arrest was made after the child's father filed a case for attempted rape with Chougachha Police Station last night.

Before that, a written complaint was lodged with the Chougachha Police Station on Wednesday.

Mehdi Hasan, sub-inspector of the police station, confirmed the arrest and case.

In the complaint, the victim's father said that the incident took place when the child was picking tamarind from under a tree around 12:00pm that day.

Jewel Rana was there at that time and lured the child to the nearby forest and tried to rape the girl. When the victim screamed, locals rushed the scene, but Rana managed to flee.

The accused, during primary interrogation, admitted the crime, said police.
