Court grants two-day remand for Barrister Sumon

two-day remand granted for Barrister Sumon

The Habiganj Judicial Magistrate Court today granted a two-day remand for Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, a former independent lawmaker.

The decision was delivered by Judge Kamrul Hasan in the afternoon.

Sub-Inspector Liton Roy, the case investigating officer, had initially sought a 10-day remand for Sumon.

The request was supported by public prosecutor Nurul Islam Chowdhury, who confirmed that the case stemmed from an attack on participants of the anti-discrimination student movement on July 16 in Chunarughat upazila.

The complaint, filed on September 11, accused Sumon and nearly 200 others, including 97 named defendants.

Barrister Sumon was arrested on October 22 in Mirpur, Dhaka, and was in custody at Dhaka Central Jail before being transferred to Habiganj District Jail yesterday ahead of the hearing.

During the hearing, Sumon's lawyer, Md Shahidul Islam, argued that his client was falsely implicated and was not present at the scene on the day of the incident.

He added that the charges were part of an effort to tarnish Sumon's career.

However, the court granted the two-day remand after reviewing the arguments.

As Sumon arrived at the courthouse in a police van around 1:00pm, tensions flared.

Supporters of the opposition BNP were present, some raising slogans demanding punishment for the former MP.

Some individuals, including legal professionals, reportedly threw eggs at Sumon amid heightened security measures at the courthouse, reports our correspondent.
