Ex-minister Qamrul on 4-day remand in murder case
A Dhaka court today placed former food minister Qamrul Islam and former Awami League lawmaker Solaiman Mohammad Salim on four-day remand each in a case filed over the death of Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mia in Paltan area on October 28, 2023.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sharifur Rahman passed the order after Investigation Officer Md Ferdous Alam, a sub-inspector of Paltan Model Police Station, produced them before the court with submitted a 10-day remand prayers.
Before that, the accused were shown arrested in the case after the investigation officer (IO) submitted an application in this regard.
In the remand prayer, the IO said Qamrul was the mastermind behind the killing while Solaiman was directly involved with the incident. They need to be remanded to find out the vital clues about the killing, the police official said.
Claiming himself innocent, Qamrul told the court that he has been suffering from different ailments, including liver cancer since 2017. "My liver was recently removed. Moreover, I could not move easily," he said, adding that he was not involved with the incident.
Upon hearing, the magistrate dismissed the defence pleas and placed them on remand for quizzing about the killing.
According to the case documents, on October 28, 2023, BNP had organised a rally in Dhaka, and AL, in response, arranged its own rally in the same area.
According to the complaint, AL members, with support from law enforcers, attacked BNP's gathering in Nayapaltan, resulting in Shamim's death on the spot.
On September 14, Abbas Ali, a former member of Jubo Dal's central committee, filed the murder case with Paltan Model Police Station, naming 704 individuals, including prominent AL leaders and police officials, and approximately 12,000 unnamed persons.
