Hamza reignites aspirations of expats seeking Bangladesh future

Since Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury received FIFA clearance to represent Bangladesh at the international level, interest among overseas-based Bangladeshi footballers in joining the national team has grown significantly.

One such player is USA-born Jayan Ahmed, a 20-year-old amateur footballer, who met with Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) technical director Saiful Bari Titu on Thursday to express his ambition to represent Bangladesh in the future.

Jayan is the son of former footballer Sharif Ahmed, who played for Eskaton Sabuj Sangha in the first division league during the 1990s. He currently competes at the university level in the USA.

"Former footballer Sharif, a contemporary of [former Bangladesh midfielder] Arman Mia, visited me with his son, who expressed his aspirations to play for Bangladesh," Titu said, adding that Jayan could potentially be considered for the U-23 team.

"As we currently have no U-23 team commitments, we advised him to stay in touch in the coming days," Titu added.

The phenomenon of expatriate footballers seeking to represent the national team is not new for Bangladesh, though. During Edson Silva Dido's tenure as head coach in 2008, similar instances occurred.

Over the years, notable inclusions have been Jamal Bhuiyan and Tariq Raihan Kazi -- the duo going on to becoming regular faces for the Men in Red and Green -- while Rahbar Khan played a few matches under English coach Jamie Day.

More recently, Syed Shah Quazem Kirmane, son of first-class cricketer Halim Shah, made his debut for Bangladesh earlier this year during a World Cup qualifier against Lebanon. Kirmane went through his developmental years in Canada before returning to Bangladesh. The midfielder currently plays for Police FC.
