Cultural activists stage rally today to save Panthakunja park

A cultural assembly took place at Panthakunja Park in Dhaka, organised by the Bangladesh Tree Protection Movement. The event aims to rally public support against the proposed elevated expressway link road from Karwan Bazar to Palashi, which poses a significant threat to the Hatirjheel reservoir and the green spaces of Panthakunja.

Artists, activists, and cultural groups from across the country gathered to amplify their message. Theatre collective BotTola, musical ensemble Samogeet, and the experimental troupe Betal are among those who performed.

Individual artists such as Bratya Amin, Tahmid Chowdhury, and Ferdous Ara Rumi also took the stage, joined by photographers Munem Wasif and Ritu Sattar, who showcased their works highlighting environmental and social issues.

Prominent poets, including Jyotirmoy Barua and Amal Akash, recited original compositions reflecting on the significance of preserving urban green spaces. Environmental activists, including Shikdar Saikat, the event's poster designer, and legal expert Syed Muhammad Zakir, addressed the gathering, calling for sustainable urban development practices.

The organisers believe that cultural events like this can create a powerful platform to mobilise communities and influence policymakers. "This assembly is not just about saving trees or a park—it's about protecting the soul of Dhaka city," said Layeka Bashir, one of the speakers at the event.

The assembly began at 2:30pm today, at Panthakunja Park, located opposite the Kathalbagan slope gate in Karwan Bazar.
