The election to appoint new leadership for the Film Directors' Association, initially scheduled for the end of last year, was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. A new date was set for January 10, but voting did not take place on the day either. On Thursday (January 9) night, members were informed via text message that the election had been postponed once again, with the Election Commission citing unavoidable circumstances as the reason. The message assured that further updates would be provided soon.

Shahin Sumon, the current acting head of the association, expressed hope that the election would be held soon.

Speaking to Prothom Alo on Friday evening, Shahin Shumon stated that the authorities at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) had cited its status as a KPI-designated area as the reason for not permitting the election. "Our association is nearly 43 years old, and all our organisational activities have always been conducted within the FDC. I hope this crisis will be resolved soon, and the election will take place at the FDC," he said.

However, differing opinions have surfaced on the matter. While one group supports the claim that election restrictions stem from the area's KPI designation, others argue otherwise.

Several directors, speaking on condition of anonymity, allege that a certain faction is deliberately stalling the election, as both contesting panels include supporters of the ruling party.

This year's election features two contesting panels. One of them, the Mushfiqur Rahman Gulzar-Shafi Uddin Shafi panel, has fielded candidates for various key positions. Apart from the president and general secretary nominees, the editorial board includes Abul Khayer Bulbul as vice president, Salauddin as deputy general secretary, Simon Tariq as treasurer, Abdur Rahim Babu as organising secretary, Rafiq Shikdar as publicity, publication, and office secretary, S.D. Rubel as international and IT secretary, and Mustafizur Rahman Manik as cultural and sports secretary.

Additionally, ten candidates are competing for executive member positions, including Shah Alam Kiron, Iftekhar Jahan, Mostafizur Rahman Babu, Bazlur Rashid Chowdhury, Badiul Alam Khokon (former general secretary), Gazi Mahbub, Anwar Siraji, Dewan Nazmul, Zainal Abedin, and Atiqur Rahman Lavlu.

In the opposing panel, the incumbent general secretary Shahin Sumon, who has served two consecutive terms, is contesting for the position of president once again. He has formed a panel alongside Shahin Kabir Tutul.

From this panel, candidates for key editorial positions include Montazur Rahman Akbar as vice president, Kabirul Islam Rana as deputy general secretary, Selim Azam as treasurer, Wazed Ali Babul as publicity, publication, and office secretary, Bondhon Biswas as international and IT secretary, and Saif Chandon as cultural and sports secretary.
