Bangladesh Football  Federation has decided to reappoint Spanish coach Javier Cabrera and English coach Peter Butler as the head coaches of the national men's and women's team, respectively.

The decision was made on Wednesday at an online emergency meeting of the BFF executive committee, with BFF president Tabith Awal in the chair from London.

The contracts of both Cabrera and Butler expired on December 31 last year, though the local game's governing body had previously hinted at retaining the successful Butler, who guided the women's team to retain the title of the SAFF Women's Championship.

However, there was uncertainty over Javier Cabrera, who led the men's team to win only two matches out of the eight Bangladesh played last year.

Asked how the meeting evaluated the performance of both coaches before making the decision, one of the BFF vice presidents, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "The meeting did not decide; rather, the president let us know about his decision to reappoint both coaches. Butler will get a one-year contract, while Cabrera will be awarded more than one year."

Another BFF vice president, seeking anonymity, also confirmed that the BFF president just let them know about the retention of Cabrera and Butler.

"It was an emergency meeting where the president requested all of us to help the secretariat complete the audit report, so that the audit report can be submitted within the deadline of January 31," the vice president said. "And the BFF president just informed us that he has almost finalised the deal with Butler and Cabrera, and it is expected to be signed by Thursday."

However, another BFF vice president, also seeking anonymity, said the emergency meeting was called to finalise the deal with Butler and Cabrera.

"Butler has been handed a one-year contract, and Cabrera has been awarded the contract up to the completion of the Asian Cup Qualifiers in March 2026," said the BFF vice president, adding that they were not given an explanation for the retention of both coaches.
