Chris Martin’s unexpected apology for British Colonialism stuns fans at Mumbai concert
British rock band Coldplay frontman Chris Martin took the audience by surprise during the band's concert at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium on Saturday, issuing an unexpected apology for Britain's colonial past in India. Known for his charisma and connection with fans, Martin delivered a heartfelt message that resonated far beyond his usual repertoire of powerful vocals.
During the performance, a fan captured the moment on Instagram when Martin paused between songs to reflect on his band's relationship with India. "This is our fourth visit to India and the second time performing here," he said. "The first time, we played a long show, and we could not have asked for a better audience. Thank you for coming today, everybody!"
Then came the unexpected: "It is amazing to us that you welcome us even though we are from Great Britain. Thank you for forgiving us for all of the bad things that Great Britain has done."
Fans were quick to respond to Martin's candid remarks, with one commenting, "Haha he's so real for that," while another praised him as "the embodiment of 'unity through music'." Others appreciated Martin's effort to address historical wounds with sincerity, describing him as "healing intergenerational trauma with a mic, stage, and some tunes."
Since arriving in India last Thursday, Martin has been immersing himself in the city's culture. Accompanied by actor-girlfriend Dakota Johnson, the couple was seen exploring Mumbai, hand in hand, blending into the city's vibrant life. Their visit included a stop at the iconic Marine Drive and prayers at a Shiva temple. They were both spotted in traditional Indian attire at the temple, embracing the spiritual atmosphere. Dakota also visited the Siddhivinayak Temple, accompanied by actors Sonali Bendre and Gayatri Joshi, further deepening their connection to the city's cultural fabric.
Coldplay kicked off their much-anticipated India tour with their first Mumbai show on Saturday evening. They will perform two more concerts in the city, on Sunday and Tuesday, before heading to Ahmedabad for two back-to-back shows on January 25 and 26. The band's ongoing tour has generated a huge buzz, with fans eagerly awaiting each performance.
