Rangpur Riders succumbed to a five-wicket loss against Chittagong Kings in a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match in Mirpur on Wednesday, suffering their third successive loss in the tournament following a couple of defeats to Durbar Rajshahi.

Shoriful Islam and Khaled Ahmed provided early breakthroughs to push Rangpur on the back foot early at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Soumya Sarkar, playing only his second BPL game this season following a return from injury, scored 23 before his run-out saw Rangpur stutter again.

From 68 for five, it was Iftekhar Ahmed who carried the innings with a 47-ball 65, laced with seven fours and three sixes. Mahedi Hasan's unbeaten 22 during the unbroken 75-run stand with Iftekhar saw Rangpur reach 143 for five.

In the chase, Chittagong lost early wickets, but Parvez Hossain Emon's 41 took them past 100 with four wickets down. Haider Ali would show hitting carnage at the death after Shamim Hossain's run-out to seize the game and keep Chittagong's hopes alive for the playoffs.

Needing 20 runs in three overs, Haider plundered four consecutive sixes off the 18th over by Akif Javed to finish on 48 off 18 balls as Chittagong swept away Rangpur by five wickets.

The result meant that Dhaka Capitals were now out of the running for a playoff spot despite having two matches remaining. Chittagong, Durbar Rajshahi, and Khulna Tigers will vie for the third and fourth positions in the standings, while Fortune Barishal and Rangpur have ensured a top-two finish.
