Dhaka pick up second win in tight game against Sylhet
Dhaka Capitals picked up their second victory in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with a six-run win over Sylhet Strikers after Liton Das and Thisara Perera's knocks got them to a formidable score, 196 for six, at Chattogram's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium today.
Sylhet did not start the innings well in chase, losing George Munsey and Zakir Hasan cheaply. Rony Talukdar and Aaron Jones (36) stitched together an 80-run stand to keep Sylhet in the game. Rony hit a 44-ball 68, but when both set batters departed, Sylhet needed something special.
With 65 required in four overs, Jaker Ali and Ariful Haque took the game on. Jaker's 28 off 13 and Ariful's 29 off the same number of deliveries almost saw Sylhet within touching distance of chasing the target.
After Jaker's dismissal, it was left to Ariful and Samiullah Shinwari. Twenty-three runs were needed off the last over, bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, and 12 came off the first three deliveries. However, on the fourth delivery, Mustafizur's near waist-length full toss saw Ariful unable to pick up the length and he was caught by the bowler himself.
Shinwari, too, was run out next ball with 11 needed off two, and Ruyel Miah hit a boundary to reduce the margin of defeat.
Earlier, Dhaka banked on Liton's 70 and skipper Thisara's cameo of 37 to post 196 for six, with a helping hand from wides and extra runs gifted by Sylhet bowlers.
Liton held the innings together, putting up a 42-run partnership with Sabbir Rahman, who got 24. The run-scoring was, however, slow as the death overs neared.
In the 14th over, Dhaka were just 101 for three. Liton got to his fifty in 38 deliveries and waited for acceleration. The innings took off after the 14th over as Thisara and Liton put up an 81-run stand off just 28 deliveries. Thisara struck 31 off 15 in that partnership, while Liton got 30 off 13.
It meant that 20 runs during that stand had come from extras, which proved to be the difference between the two sides in the end.
